Germany to Shut Nuclear Reactors by 2022

Al Jazeera has reported that Germany has become the first major industrialised country to commit to shutting down all its nuclear reactors.

The plants affected by the moratorium will not be reconnected, a second group of six reactors will taken off the grid no later than 2021 and the three most modern plants will be taken off the grid by 2022 – apparently, there will be no clause for revision.  The country aims to move to reliance upon renewable energy.

The decision still needs to go through parliament but leaders of the opposition Social Democrats and the Greens were present at parts of the meeting to enable a broad consensus.
