Humpback Whales in Different Areas are Singing Different Songs

The Earth Times has reported on a study comparing humpback whale song from different whale breeding gatherings.

The study found that Northern Hemisphere whale song comparisons showed that whales within ocean basins share similar songs and are sub-populations within a larger population whereas whales in the southern India Ocean sang almost completely different songs.  These songs can last half an hour and contain complex parts or themes made up of high and low wails, shrieks and moaning sounds, with the males usually being responsible for the singing.  Please visit the Earth Times web site for the full report.
