Mongbay has reported the discovery of another new species of bird: the Antioquia wren. The wren was first seen in 2010 and discovered in the dry forest area of the Ituango municipality of Colombia. Photographs and recordings of the bird’s vocalizations allowed scientists to confirm the wren as a new species.
The bad news is the bird may soon disappear. Mining, tourism, and deforestation have caused widespread habitat loss and what will be Colombia’s largest dam, the Pescadero-Ituango, will flood the wren’s best forest. Unfortunately, none of the region’s dry forest is protected.
